James D. Petrick, ph.D.

Bio-sketch

James D. Petrick, Ph.D. is a clinical neuropsychologist in independent practice specializing in working with individuals with various neurological, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric disorders.  He sees people who have sustained neurological trauma including concussion and more severe traumatic brain injury, chemical exposure, cerebral vascular accident, hypoxia/anoxia, etc.  He also sees individuals with a wide array of other medical conditions including Alzheimers disease, vascular dementia, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy/seizure disorders, hydrocephalus, etc.  His practice is focused mostly on differential diagnosis and identifying treatment recommendations.  The primary office is in Mt. Lebanon, PA.  He has  been on staff at Allegheny General Hospital, Suburban General, Ruby Memorial Hospital, and Mountainview Regional Rehabilitation Hospital .  He has served as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry with the West Penn Health System (AHN) and the West Virginia University School of Medicine, Drexil University, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania.  He was also the Clinical Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic with the West Virginia University Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center for Excellence in Disabilities.  He is currently a clinical supervisor with the University of Pittsburgh and also Carlow University.  He is also the Clinical Director of the Center for Concussion Management.


Dr. Petrick completed his doctorate in clinical psychology at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida.  He completed residency training at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida.  He completed a fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry.  He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of  Pennsylvania and the State of Virginia.  He is board certified.  He provides diagnostic and therapy services to the Office  of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) and consults with other state agencies including a number of different law enforcement agencies.  He has provided medico-legal consultation and expert testimony concerning neurological trauma since 1992.  


Dr. Petrick has published and presented a number of studies, articles, and book chapters specific to clinical neuropsychology, neurological disease, trauma, substance abuse, and dementia.  He is the 1995 recipient of the Nelson Butters Research Award of the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN) for contributions to the field concerning the differential diagnosis of dementia and depressive pseudo-dementia and stereopsis.  Current research interests include the differential diagnosis of post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and depression, PCS and attribution theory, and the nature of cognitive deficit associated with  white matter disease.
